1941 DESOTO CUSTOM “S-8” SEDAN #5768502. (Stock #4233.) Every once in a while, an amazingly original and low mileage antique will arrive at The Stable. This DeSoto certainly qualifies as amazingly original—original paint, interior, all running gear, etc—and has been kept in excellent condition for 80 years. The car came to New Jersey in 1987 from its original home in Georgia, then having covered @36,000 miles. Georgia is a prime state for cars to survive without being too susceptible to the ravages of time--no snow, no salt on the roads, no rust issues with the cars. Our DeSoto came to us from a local estate and is remarkably original and complete. With its “flat six” engine and fluid drive transmission, the car starts instantly and runs beautifully. Steering, brakes, suspension, exhaust, front end—all feel just as they should. The original black paint has obviously been maintained sympathetically and the original interior, although now showing its age, is quite presentable. The car is accompanied by its original owner’s manual, appropriate informational materials and many, many service records from over the decades. It also carries 12 trophies from its appearances at shows over the years. Not many DeSotos are to be found on today’s roads—especially pre-war examples—and this one is a most unusual find. 43,706 miles. $16,000.
